On 12 January Minister Muyters announced Flanders’ candidacy for the World Championships Cycling in 2021. He has reserved a budget of 3.5 million euros to prepare the bid together with the cycling federations.
The World Championships Cycling is the most important cycling event of the year. It is the ideal opportunity to presents Flanders as cycling region to the world. This candidacy also shows the ambition of the Government to increase Flanders’ international reputation through the organization of top events.
The organization of the World Championships Cycling also yields an economic return. "The economic impact is considerable and cautiously estimated at 30 million euros," said Minister Muyters. "Although, as a real cycling region we may be even more ambitious."
The International Cycling Union, UCI, decides in September 2018 which country will organize the Championships in 2021.
