On 18 April, General Representative Yves Wantens signed on behalf of Flemish Minister for Mobility, Ben Weyts, the Ministerial Declaration "Inland Navigation in a Global Setting" in Poland. The declaration sets forth a number of strategic actions to improve the competitiveness of inland navigation worldwide and to create a sustainable future for the sector.
The declaration stresses the need for an appropriate regulatory framework, an international development process, innovation to increase the competitiveness of the sector and resilience to climate change.
The signing took place during the International Ministerial Conference on Inland Transport in Wroclaw, Poland, which was organized on 18 and 19 April by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Polish Ministry for Maritime Economy. The many economic benefits of inland navigation in terms of safety, environmental protection and logistics were the central discussion points during the conference. As well as the potential of inland navigation to make a significant contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Agenda 2030.
