The Hauts-de-France region was formed in 2016, when the former regions of Nord-Pas de Calais and Picardy merged. The region borders directly with the province of West Flanders and there is therefore strong cross-border cooperation, under the framework of different structures. Near the border, in French Flanders, some people still speak a West-Flemish dialect.
