Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world and one of the most important emerging economies. Dutch colonisation means there are cultural ties with our linguistic region – just think of the novels by Couperus or Multatuli – and Dutch remains an important language sources for historians and lawyers. Along with its Southeast Asian neighbours, it forms the ASEAN, an organisation whose goal is economic, cultural and political cooperation within the region. In addition to trade relations, Flanders has good contacts in the region in the field of maritime cooperation.
