On 6 February, Minister-President Bourgeois granted 234 540 euros to the Centre for Human Rights (CHR) in Pretoria. With this grant the CHR, an academic institution for the promotion of human rights in Africa, will organize advanced courses for African participants the next three years.
The Flemish support applies to 3 specific courses, each with a separate focus: "Sexual Minority Rights in Africa", "The Right to Development in Africa" and "The African Human Rights System in Comparative Perspective". These courses are advanced and meant for lawyers, judges and human rights activists working in Africa. The courses are the result of a close collaboration between the CHR and the universities of Antwerp, Ghent and Leuven.
The Government of Flanders has been supporting the Centre for Human Rights in Pretoria since 2012. Minister-president Bourgeois visited the center in August 2017 during his mission to Southern Africa.
