The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations. The organisation provides a global forum for tourism policy issues and a source of information on tourism. UNWTO plays a central role in promoting responsible, sustainable and accessible global tourism, with a particular focus on developing countries. The organisation is committed to the achievement of the Millennium Goals of the United Nations and there is a special emphasis on the goals of reducing poverty and fostering sustainable development.
In October 1997, Flanders became an associate member of UNWTO and, as such, is part of the General Assembly and the European Commission of the organisation. Flanders represents the associate members on the Executive Council and in the Programme and Budget Committee
