On 26 April, Secretary General Koen Verlaeckt and Daniel Dayton, Executive Director of the ‘United States World War One Centennial Commission’ (USWW1CC) signed a cooperation agreement for the commemoration America’s assistance during the First World War. US ambassador Denise Bauer attended the signing ceremony.
The venue for this event was the Leuven’s Central Library, a symbolic place. The library was destroyed in 1914 during ‘The Fire of Leuven’. After the war the library was rebuilt with US support.
The signed agreement aims at strengthening the cooperation between Flanders and the United States for the commemoration of World War I, in the fields of communication, knowledge exchange and commemoration events.
Flemish Representative in New York, Geert De Proost, is already active in several USWW1CC activities such as ‘The Volunteers: Americans join World War One, 1914-1919’ - curriculum. With the support of the Representation, AFS Intercultural Programs developed a curriculum for high school students on World War I, in particular focusing on the US efforts in the war.
