On March 22nd, Vice-Minister-President of the Government of Flanders, Bart Somers, participated in the panel of the webinar ‘Local and Regional Governments at the Forefront of Women Empowerment - the Basque Country & Flanders in conversation with New York City’. The webinar was organized on the occasion of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW65).
Minister Somers and Basque Minister of Equality, Justice, and Social Policies, Beatriz Artolazabal highlighted some inspiring best practices from their regional governments. The ministers were joined in the conversation by New York City Commissioner for International Affairs, Penny Abeywardena. Minister Somers touched upon gender as a socialconstruct, and how society’s expectations limit the aspirations and touch the lives of both women and men. Raising awareness about what gender means, and how gender expectations and stereotypes affect all of us in daily life are now a big part and parcel of Flanders' policy.
