On 4 June, the “Armoured Wings” exhibition about Polish liberators in Flanders opened in Warsaw. The exhibition covers the 1944 liberation of Flanders by General Maczek's 1st Armoured Division. The expo was inaugurated by Minister-president Geert Bourgeois and Piotr Gliński, Deputy Prime Minister of Poland.
In his speech, Bourgeois praised the efforts of Dirk Verbeke, the driving force behind the project. The former city secretary of Tielt addresses Flemish relatives of Polish soldiers who liberated about thirty Flemish municipalities in 1944. In 2019, 75 years after the liberation, the exhibition moves to Flanders.
The Minister-president also met with Jadwiga Emilewicz, Polish Minister for entrepreneurship and technology on 5 June. They discussed Flanders' position in the Brexit negotiations. Bourgeois concluded his mission with a visit to FRONTEX, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. The agency helps EU countries manage their external borders.
