The Government of Flanders makes 25.000 dollar available for the Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) that the Government of Nepal has launched after the recent earthquakes in the country. The contribution – from the Flemish UNESCO Trust Fund – is supporting the participation of UNESCO in the PDNA.
The PDNA is mapping the specific needs in terms of energy, infrastructure, logistics, health, nutrition and education in order to develop a recovery strategy in the short and long run. UNESCO is taking the lead in the assessment of the damage to cultural heritage. UNESCO has an extensive experience in providing help when heritage is damaged or even lost due to (natural) disasters or armed conflicts.
The Flemish contribution is responding to the specific demand of the Flemish Parliament to support the conservation and recovery of World Heritage in Nepal. To this end the Government of Flanders chooses to cooperate with UNESCO, a multilateral organization with whom Flanders has a strong bond.
