On 8 December, General Representative Geert De Proost pledged 600.000 euros to the VN emergency fund CERF. This makes Flanders the largest regional donor for the eighth year in a row. With the annual funding of CERF, Flanders wants to focus on structurally reinforcing the global humanitarian system.
Since 2011, Flanders has been annually contributing to the emergency fund. In 2016, the Government of Flanders decided to double the contribution to further substantiate an integrated emergency approach. “We have doubled our annual contribution to CERF 2 years ago because of the increase of humanitarian needs around the world. Today we confirm this engagement and we hope new donors will also join our effort to realize a 1 billion fund,” said the General Representative Geert De Proost at the pledging conference in New York.
The Central Emergency Response Fund of the United Nations provides support to victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters in a timely and reliable way. By increasing the advanced financing, CERF can react swift and flexible when humanitarian disasters occur.
