On 18 August, Minister-president Bourgeois was welcomed warmly at his arrival in Malawi. Joseph Mwanamvekha, Minister of agriculture, and Tedson Kalebe, Ambassador of Malawi in Brussels, officially welcomed the Flemish delegation at Lilongwe Airport. A meeting with the President of Malawi, Arthur Mutharika, and an official state dinner followed the same evening.
Malawi and Flanders are working together for 10 years. During these 10 years, the focus of the cooperation moved towards agriculture and food security. Agriculture is the main economic sector in Malawi.
Together with the Minister of Agriculture Mwanamvekha, minister-president bourgeois visited a number of projects, funded by the Government of Flanders. Like call center ‘Mlimi Hotline’. Malawian farmers can consult this center six days a week for advice. And the warehouse in the Kasunga Dictrict, funded by Flanders and the World Food Programme (WFP), where farmers can store their harvest in optimal conditions.
After two days in Malawi, Minister-president Bourgeois and the Flemish delegation returned to South Africa for the second week of the mission to Southern Africa.
