Lydia Peeters, Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works, started a three-day working visit to Copenhagen and Odense on 25 October. The bicycle and sustainable mobility were central to this.
“I'm going to meet the good examples of one of the best cycling regions in the world. Copenhagen also scores well in terms of public transport. The experiences I gain here will help me to further shape my mobility policy in Flanders in a sustainable way. I want to create a real cycling reflex for every Flemish person so that they take the bike more easily when they move.” – said Minister Peeters.
Minister Peeters was received and guided by the Representatives of Flanders in Copenhagen. In addition, three Flemish cycling experts traveled to Denmark. Along with them, Minister Peeters was able to experience why Copenhagen has been one of the best cycling cities in the world for years. A bicycle tour showed the different facets of Copenhagen's bicycle policy. Flemish and Danish cycling experts discussed best practices at various times during this mission and shared their knowledge.
The mission was not only about bicycle policy. Specific attention was also paid to the sustainability strategy of the city of Copenhagen and how citizens are involved in the urban mobility plans. In addition, local policy experts explained how investments are made in sustainable mobility (public transport and sharing systems), how innovative mobility solutions are tested and integrated in new urban developments and how the public sector collaborates with private parties on metro and tram investments.
During her stay, the minister also met Professor Hans Bruyninckx, a Fleming who currently heads the European Environment Agency, which is located in Copenhagen.
